About PURA Numbers
On 4 September 2026, every Gambian mobile number gains a two-digit operator prefix inserted after +220. A number written +220 770 0011 becomes +220 87 770 0011. Nothing else changes.
That is a small change to each number and a large change to every address book in the country. PURA Numbers exists to make it a reviewed change rather than a manual one: it reads the contacts on your phone, works out which numbers the plan applies to, shows you each proposed change, and writes only what you approve.
Who publishes it
It is published by PURA, the authority that issues The Gambia's numbering plan. PURA's public notice warns that impersonators will target this migration, so check the publisher before you install: the genuine app is listed by PURA on the App Store and Google Play. Being the official app raises the standard rather than lowering it. PURA’s own public notice warns Gambians to expect impersonation during this migration, and a crest is the easiest thing in the world to copy — so this app is not identified by its decoration. It carries no seal, no flag and no ministry masthead. What identifies it is the publisher name on the store listing, the single permission it asks for, and the fact that it never asks you for a code or a payment.
Three things it will not do
- Upload your contacts. Reading happens on the phone. Your address book is not uploaded, copied off the device, or shared.
- Change anything you have not seen. Every proposed change is shown before it is made, one by one.
- Guess. Where the published plan does not say which two digits a number gains, PURA Numbers reports it as needing a decision instead of inventing an answer.
And one it will
Before writing anything, PURA Numbers saves a record of each number as it is now. Any run can be restored from the History tab, indefinitely, without a connection. If it could not store that record, it says so plainly rather than offering an undo it cannot honour.
The name
PURA Numbers means peace in Mandinka and Wolof.
